Environmentally Sustainable Dinner Dates

From a catering consultant perspective a growing number of our commissions include identifying and introducing initiatives to create more environmentally sustainable catering operations. However, the Swedes seem to have taken it to a whole new level!

Farmers’ cooperative Lantmannen has introduced a website that pairs up single people to share leftover ingredients and meals.

According to Lantmannen every fifth bag of food in Sweden is thrown away, which in an effort to reduce waste prompted the creation of Restdejting. The environmentally friendly date starts with a visit to the website and entering five ingredients that have been leftover. The list is then published on Facebook for other Restdejting members to browse. There is even an option for users to select the ingredient they are missing along with if they wish to set up a dinner for two, three or four. For those falling short on menu ideas, the site also provides recipe suggestions for the listed leftovers.

It’s certainly a very different angle to any that we have seen to dealing with food wastage and does bring a whole new meaning to the phrase, ‘cheap date’.
