Tender opportunity: The Eastlands Trust – The HSBC UK National Cycling Centre & The National Squash Centre

The Eastlands Trust is responsible for managing prime sporting venues on behalf of Manchester City Council.

The Trust wishes to appoint an experienced and successful catering partner to assist in the further development of its catering operations at two of its sites: The HSBC UK National Cycling Centre (NCC) and the National Squash Centre (NSC).

As well as cafes at each of the venues there is a requirement for a full range of buffets and refreshments to several meeting rooms hired out to corporate clients and partners. For major events a number of bars and food outlets are provided along the spectator concourse, complemented by a range of vending machines. The Trust also works with a range of commercial caterers to further support other catering requirements including VIP hospitality.

The future catering partner will need to be a dynamic, experienced and ambitious company, which is imaginative, and flexible and able to work to a partnership model.

Opening Date For The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre

Northumberland National Park Authority has confirmed its £14.8m state-of the-art visitor centre will officially open to the public on Saturday 29th July 2017. The public opening is taking place during National Parks Week, an annual celebration of Britain’s 15 National Parks.

The Sill is the UK’s first National Landscape Discovery Centre and the result of an innovative partnership between Northumberland National Park Authority and YHA (England and Wales).

Located in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site and within Northumberland National Park the building sits sympathetically in the landscape and is at the forefront of sustainable design.

The Sill: National Discovery Centre features fixed and temporary exhibitions focusing on landscape, culture and heritage, several learning and event spaces, a 90 seater café showcasing local produce, a world-class Youth Hostel, a rural business hub to house and support new and emerging rural enterprises, a shop with local produce, arts and crafts, a tourist information service and a fully accessible Whin Sill grassland roof, planted to replicate the unique natural grassland of the surrounding area.

Z-arts is Manchester’s dedicated venue for children, families and friends, with a mission to inspire and enable generations of young people from across Manchester and beyond to utilise their creativity to maximise their potential.

Z-arts run 18 different weekly participatory classes in all art forms for children aged 0-13 in their artistic hub which houses a 230 seat theatre, gallery, music room, dance studio and various activity rooms as well as a busy café.

The iconic Edwardian building was redeveloped as a multi-purpose arts centre in 2002 and the organisation has recently shifted its emphasis to become Manchester’s venue for children and families. As such, the aim is to make some improvements to the building to better serve the needs of visitors and make a more family friendly environment with a more light and airy feel to the café, reception and gallery areas.

Montfort Catering Consultants have recently been supporting Z-arts determine outline considerations for the future food and beverage operation within a redeveloped building. Specifically this has included defining the most appropriate operation to initially support a funding application as well as acting as a guide for the design planning. Specifically we have supported with:

  • Determining the future aspirations and objectives for the café.
  • Assessment of market requirements and environmental factors.
  • Future demand, financial potential and business case, benchmarked against a wide range of comparable organisations.
  • Food and beverage requirements/considerations.
  • Outline conceptual style and operating parameters.

Sotheby’s is located in the heart of London’s Mayfair district on New Bond Street. Sotheby’s auctions offer an extraordinary diversity of objects and works of art from Impressionist & Modern Art and Contemporary Art to Old Master Paintings, 19th Century European Art and Islamic Art, as well as Decorative Art from porcelain and silver to French & English furniture amongst others.

Montfort Catering Consultants have recently been supporting Sotheby’s, providing assistance and specialist catering consultancy advice to increase patronage of their newly opened Gallery 1 & 2 Coffee Bar.

Our initial work has included undertaking a high level operational review of Gallery 1 & 2 Coffee Bar, including menu style & relevance, quality & value for money, staffing & service style, internal signage, marketing, merchandising & branding and general layout observations. In addition, we considered the appropriateness of existing marketing and communications channels along with identifying additional and alternative approaches to marketing and communications.

The detailed recommendations have been well received and are in the process of being implemented.

The University of Greenwich is one of the most respected, high quality universities in London and Kent, with a proud tradition that dates back more than 125 years.

The university has three outstanding campuses and a heritage of world-class research and technological innovation. It is home to a diverse and talented community of more than 21,000 students, with a further 2,540 staff.

The university’s campuses in south east London and Kent all offer modern, hi-tech facilities within magnificent and historic settings.

  • The largest campus is centred on the Old Royal Naval College in Royal Greenwich, at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage, sited on the banks of the River Thames and next to Greenwich Royal Park.
  • The Avery Hill Camus in Eltham enjoys a parkland setting combining the grace of a Victorian mansion with modern living and teaching facilities.
  • The Medway Campus features redbrick Edwardian buildings in Chatham Maritime, Kent.

The catering outlets on campus provide a range of food offers, incorporating main meals, deli and salad bars, food to go, sandwiches, snacks and quality hot and cold beverages. Across the campus there are currently seven retail catering and dining student and staff outlets, some of which are also open to the public.

In addition, there is a very busy hospitality requirement across the campus, providing for internal and external meetings, events, conferences, functions, as well as formal dining. Summer schools are a further important market and income stream.

University of Greenwich continues to invest significantly in its estate and in 2018 the Dreadnought building, located on the Greenwich Campus, will open following complete refurbishment. The ground floor will include a further catering outlet, providing in the region of 250 seats for dining. In addition, the basement will house a Student Union bar and dining space.

Additional consideration is also being given to introducing a catered hall meal plan within one of the university’s more recently newly built halls of residence.

Brockhole on WindermereBrockhole on Windermere is owned and managed by The Lake District National Park Authority, England’s largest National Park. The Brockhole house and grounds cover an area of 30 acres, with 10 acres of formal gardens. The terrace enjoys a beautiful view of the Langdale Pikes and stunning Windermere lakeshore.

Brockhole attracts in the region of 360,000 visitors per year.

Activities at Brockhole Visitor Centre include archery, boat hire, bike hire, mini golf, pony rides, all weather play, adventure playground, exhibitions, trails and orienteering, Treetop Nets and Treetop Trek. Brockhole is also available to hire for weddings, parties and groups. You can even travel to Brockhole by steamer!

As well as all of the activities there is a shop and visitor catering including Visitor Café, Lakeshore Cabin and Brockhole Bites.

Brockhole on WindermereWe have very recently undertaken a critical review of the existing visitor catering offer along with providing detailed recommendations to ensure that it supports in providing the best possible visitor experience along with the optimum financial return to the Lake District National Park Authority. As well as focusing on the existing operations, the project also included key elements to be used in the planning process for potential capital investment options for the site. In summary this project has included:

  • Catering operational review, including SWOT analysis
  • Market analysis including visitor profiling, national research & trends
  • Feasibility for additional visitor catering facilities
  • Identification of key visitor catering opportunities & recommendations
  • Benchmarking, financial potential & visitor peak seat requirement
  • Detailed management structure, staffing review & development

Middlesbrough Council is currently delivering an £8 million capital scheme to restore and redevelop Middlesbrough Town Hall as a vibrant cultural and heritage hub for Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley. The plans include the restoration of the Carriageway with original glass roof which will become the main box office and circulation area, the development of new café and bar facilities, and a new community space.

Hampshire ConstabularyHampshire Fire and Rescue, The Office of the Police & Crime Commissioner and Hampshire Constabulary have a growing number of shared sites across the county. HFRS and OPCC have requirements for the provision of a range of catering services for several operational premises based across the County of Hampshire.

The Office of the Police & Crime CommissionerSite locations include Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service & Hampshire Constabulary Headquarters, Eastleigh; Hampshire Constabulary Southern Support Training Centre, Netley; Southampton Central Police Station; and in the future two new Police Investigation Centres in Basingstoke and Portsmouth. The scope of catering arrangements required is similar at each site and includes staff catering, custody suite catering, coffee shop style facilities, refreshments for meetings, conference and event hospitality and snack vending.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue ServiceWe have recently provided specialist catering consultancy support to HFRS and OPCC to support the catering tender process and ensure that the tender and contract is appropriate and attractive to a wide range of relevant catering organisations. Our scope has included reviewing the catering at each of the aforementioned sites; reviewing the Invitation to Tender and Specification documents; undertaking a review and benchmarking the current financial performance as well as reviewing elements of the Framework Agreement. Following this we provided detailed recommendations in relation to the Invitation to Tender and Specification documents, as well as conceptual, operational, design and financial recommendations including developing a detailed demand and profit & loss forecast for the sites. Information was also presented to the Partners.

After much anticipation and a year’s worth of renovations, Broadway Theatre will unveil its inaugural season, as it opens its doors for the very first time. This is a new theatre for Letchworth housed within the much-loved iconic Broadway Cinema, but it is also a new regional theatre for Hertfordshire. The new two-in-one-theatre can be turned into a theatre and back in to a cinema overnight, allowing a varied and vibrant programme.

The Heritage Foundation continues to invest in the fabric of the building and visitors will experience a refurbished foyer, concessions, toilets and a new bar upstairs.

Montfort Catering Consultants has been further supporting Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, determining the key considerations for the future food, concession and bar operations within Broadway Theatre & Cinema.

Tender opportunity: Hallé St Peter, Manchester

Hallé St Peter’s is the Hallé’ Orchestra’s rehearsal, recording and event venue in Manchester. The Grade 2 listed building, located in the vibrant area of Ancoats, is a deconsecrated church built in 1859 which had previously fallen in to disrepair.

It has now been redeveloped and restored to its former glory and is a light, airy and beautiful venue ideal for rehearsing, performing, teaching and recording. It is also a perfect event space for weddings, receptions, product launches and exhibitions.

The Hallé Concerts Society has just been granted planning permission to further develop the site. Subject to a successful fundraising campaign, the extension at Hallé St Peter’s will create much needed ancillary facilities, fantastic new rehearsal, community and event spaces together with a public facing café sited on fashionable Cutting Room Square in the heart of Ancoats.

Expressions of interest

We are inviting expressions of interest from commercial and innovative caterers, café and restaurant operators interested in working in partnership to provide café, bar and events services in the ‘new’ Hallé St Peter’s from late 2018. This service will have to cover the in-house requirements of the Hallé and its associated ensembles, alongside the public facing café and events catering provision for 200+ guests.

During the summer the Soil Association worked with a team of ‘secret diner’ parents to compile a league table ranking the food and drink offer at the UK’s favourite days out – zoos, theme parks, museums, art galleries, visitor centres and botanic gardens.

We are delighted to see two of the organisations we have worked with in the top 4 – Chester Zoo (2nd) and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo (4th).

We have recently been supporting Contact by undertaking a catering strategy, feasibility study and business planning for their exciting capital development project. With a significant proportion of the funding now in place, we are now supporting Contact secure a catering partner to provide cafe, bar and event services in a ‘new’ Contact. Contact is a vibrant professional contemporary theatre and arts venue, with young people at the heart of everything we do.

From our iconic theatre situated on Oxford Road in central Manchester we deliver our outstanding year-round public programme. We commission, co-produce and present new work with and for young people with Manchester-based national and international organisations.

Our Arts Council England Lottery-funded £6.5m redevelopment project, to be completed in 2018, will make our venue more open, welcoming and accessible, with fantastic new performance and community spaces, equipped with the latest digital technologies for the next generation of audiences, artists and young people. Contact reaches over 100,000 people annually through shows, exhibitions and activities, and many more through national touring. Our co-productions have opened in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol, and Contact’s commissioned shows tour to venues and festivals nationwide.

Expressions of interest

We are inviting expressions of interest from commercial and innovative caterers, café and restaurant operators interested in working in partnership to provide café, bar and events services in the ‘new’ Contact from summer 2018, ready for our autumn public reopening. We are looking for creative ideas to complement our Vision – ‘a world where young people are empowered by creativity to become leaders in both the arts and their communities’.  It is essential that our future catering partner shares Contact’s values.

In the first instance, please email rosehiles@contactmcr.com expressing your interest by Monday 17 October 2016 stating, on no more than two sides of A4, why you are interested in working in partnership with us and your organisational/individual background and relevant experience. Informal discussions will be held w/c 29 October 2016 with those shortlisted. We will then invite formal proposals to be submitted by w/c 5 December 2016 from those selected, with a view to holding interviews in January 2017.

The Halle, St Peter’s – Cafe Bar Development

The Halle, St Peter’s

Now in its 158th season, the Halle ranks among the UK’s top symphonic ensembles, with a distinguished history of acclaimed performances in this country and around the world; award winning recordings; radio broadcasts and educational outreach programmes; and a visionary commitment to building audiences and developing orchestral repertoire.

The Halle St Peter's interiorHalle St Peter’s is the Halle’s rehearsal, recording and event venue in Ancoats, Manchester. The building, located on Blossom Street, is a Grade 2 listed deconsecrated church, which was built in 1859. After standing empty for decades, the Halle acquired St Peter’s and it has been redeveloped and restored to its former glory providing a light, airy and beautiful space ideal for rehearsing, performing, teaching and recording.

A capital development project creating a new-build extension will form the second phase of the project to transform the Grade II listed former church building into rehearsal, performance, education and ancillary spaces for the Halle Orchestra, Choir and other ensembles. Included within the ancillary spaces it is proposed that there will be a public café bar along with supporting kitchen.

Building works are projected to commence late May 2017 with the building reopening eighteen months later in September 2018.
