Building a Theatre for the future

We are very pleased to announce that we have been awarded £2,850,000 by Arts Council England to undertake a major redevelopment of Theatre Royal. Coupled with grants from City of York Council and other trusts and foundations, we are close to raising the £4.1 million that will allow us to make the most significant changes to the Theatre since Patrick Gwynne’s 1967 extension.

With extended foyer spaces, a revamped auditorium and improved access around the building, we will create a magnificent building and whilst this will mean a brief closure from March next year we will be back open for the return of Berwick in our 2015 pantomime.

We still have money to raise and hope that you can help us to achieve our goal; we have just £500,000 left to raise, but every little helps and we have outlined a few ways you can help below.

A welcoming new foyer with access for all

By enclosing the colonnade we will create a new main entrance with level access and more space for our thousands of visitors each year.

By opening up the currently under used Georgian staircase we will make it easier for audiences to access the main auditorium from both sides.

The colonnade will provide space for an improved café/bar service with free wifi and recharge points.

The whole Theatre will be made more accessible with a lift in the foyer giving access to the Dress Circle where we will be providing six new spaces for wheelchair users in addition to those in the Stalls.

Improved sound-separation between the theatre spaces and foyer will mean that our bar and café will be in use throughout the day, making the Theatre the perfect place to meet, or just relax all day (and evening) long.

and, of course, more and much, much better toilet facilities in all parts of our building.

And once you’re in the auditorium….

An improved auditorium that offers a better experience for audiences and actors.

Re-tiered seating in the Stalls will improve sightlines and offer exceptional views from all levels of the auditorium.

New seats, including new individual seats in the Gallery, will offer a far more comfortable experience for our audiences.

Flattening and installing a new flexible stage system will allow us to create new, innovative and exciting work.

How can you make a difference?

We hope that you’re as excited as us by the plans for developing our Theatre.  The effect this project will have on our front of house areas and the quality of experience in the main auditorium will be outstanding and we look forward to welcoming you to the new Theatre in November 2015.

Our fundraising appeal is going well and we are extremely grateful to the Arts Council England, City of York Council, trusts and foundations and other organisations and individuals who have already announced their support for the project. However, we still have a way to go and that is where we need your help.

There are three easy ways in which you can give to the Capital appeal to help us to create a Theatre for the future:

1: Give £1 (or more!) when you book your tickets online

At the online checkout you’ll see an option for an additional donation – all funds raised will go towards the Capital project and we can claim the Gift Aid too where appropriate.

2: Text YTRC15 £(amount you wish to donate) to 70070

You can donate up to £30 by text and it’s easy to confirm that we can claim the Gift Aid on this too.

3: Go to www.justgiving.com/yorktheatreroyal/donate

It’s easy and secure to donate any amount online via Just Giving and enable us to claim the Gift Aid on your donation too.

Thank you for your support.
