Independent Coffee Shops – Part I – Cafe Advice

Independent Coffee Shops or Coffee Houses are well and truly back in vogue. If you’re more of a branded coffee chain type, take a break from your usual and see what you’re missing.

In this the first of a series of overviews of independent coffee shops, we start with some of our favourites in London.

Prufrock Coffee

Applying  science to coffee making. Located on Leather Lane and also with their own Barista Resource & Training Centre (BRAT). Great design and environment, with fantastic coffee and baked goods. Even if you don’t like coffee, if nothing else visit to see their ‘apparatus’.

Department of Coffee and Social Affairs

Just down from Prufrock, the Department of Coffee and Social Affairs also on Leather Lane is ‘a collection of coffee professionals, designers and artists’. When we visited it also seemed to have a loyal following from the office fraternity. There’s also a meeting room for hire.

Fernadez & Wells

With operations now on St Anne’s Court, Beak Street, Lexington St and at Somerset House, we have for a long time now been huge fans of Fernandez & Wells. Beak Street is still our favourite, with its slabs of wood for tables and Pasteis de Nata (Portuguese custard tarts). If you’re a coffee equipment connoisseur you’re also in for a treat here!
